in 1980 abraham opened up a resturant selena y los dinos would play there pleasing the customers.however it wasnt to be the resturaunt closed down less than a year later when the oil industry in texas went bust.now the quintanilla family without money or home moved to corpus christi where selena y los dinos became the familys scorce of income.living on there tour bus selena and her family travelled round playing everywhere they could to put food on the table.with all her performing selena soon was pulled out of school she went on to finish her education by corrospondance.it wasnt long before their hard work begun to pay off.in 1984 selena y los dinos begun recording for various record lables in texas.by 1987 selena,s talent and persona had won quite a following this was enough to win her the award for female vocalist of the year at the tejano music awards.she would go on to win this award for the rest of her life.

in 1989 selena y los dinos signed with capitol emi latin by this time her band had expanded to include pete astudillo who sang duets with her on such songs as yo te amo.chris perez was also recruted on guitar.her popularity has expanded also so much so that a fan club was formed with a fan from san antonio-yolonda saldivar as president.in 1992 selena now being put forward as a solo artist released entre a mi mundo(enter my world) which included her 1st big hit song como la flor(like the flower)selena was finally on her way to the top but not before a major change came in her life.chris perez had worked along side selena for 2years in which time a friendship had developed.nobody would have even guessed that a romance could happened between the unlikley couple after all they were too different.nevertheless selena quintanilla became selena quintanilla perez when they married on april 2nd 1992.her shocked family quickly grew to love chris as one of there own.

in 1993 selena released a live album which included 3 new studio songs.live was nominated for the best mexican/american album at the 1994 grammys.to everyones delight selena won the grammy making her the second tejano artist ever to win such grammy.that same year while working on her next album selena began plans to bring to life a long time cherished dream-to be a designer.she opened up a boutique in her home town of corpus christi with the help of her fan club president yolonda saldivar- by now was a close friend of hers-who took charge of running the boutique.

selena's album amor prohibido(forbidden love) was the crowning atchivment of her career.it knocked gloria estefan off of the number one spot in the latin album charts'was selling fast.not just in the hispanic parts of north america and mexico but the rest of south america,purto rico and many other places.selena was no doubt by this time on top of the world and the record comany agreed they signed selena for an enlish launguage recording contract.selena was estatic english was her first laungage and for her it was a dream come true.the beginning of 1995 saw her begin recording the english-crossover album as well as open up another boutique this time in san antonio as always her trusted friend yolonda saldivar was right behind her...or so it seemed.

weeks after a record breaking performance at the houston astrodome selena's father called a meeting with yolonda,selena and suzette.in this meeting he confronted yolonda over paper work and money that was missing from the fan club and boutiques yolonda had been caught out.selena was torn not wanting to believe her best friend had betrayed her.the quintanilla family cut their ties with yolonda....selena did not days after the confrontation yolonda go's to buy herself a handgun.on march30th selena with chris went to visit yolonda at the days inn motel where she was staying in corpus christi in order to collect the missing paperwork.yolonda handed it over but later at home they found some was stil missing.yolonda started calling selena telling her she'd been raped recently in mexico and she wanted to be taken to hospital.chris objected to selena going back out at such a late hour so she promised yolonda she would take her the next morning.selena stuck to her promise but at the hospital the doctors found no evidence of a rape.selena was upset by this and took yolonda back to the motel.

its said that at this point selena was ready to break all ties with yolonda.selena gives her back the egg shaped friendship ring yolonda had recently given to her and goes to walk out of the room and out of yolonda's life forever.this was the moment yolonda had expected and dreaded for weeks.she pulls out of her bag the the gun she'd bought after the confrontation with abraham quintanilla and fire's it at selena.the bullet hits selena in the back of her shoulder-severing a major artery.bleeding profusly selena run's for help.she makes it to the motel lobby and manages to name yolonda as her asassin as well as her room number before losing consiousness.the ambulance arrives quickly rushing selena to the local hospital.dispite their efforts selena was pronounced dead at 1.05pm.
